Fort George and Clava Cairns
Fort George was built after the battle of Culloden, between 1748 and 1769. It spreads over 42 acres and contains army barracks, cannon batteries, ammunition stores, a Chapel, a bake house and a brew house. The scale of this Fort is very impressive and you can easily understand the demoralising impact this would have had upon the Jacobite cause. On your return journey to Inverness you will visit the ruins of Clava Cairns, a well preserved Bronze Age cemetery in a stunning setting overlooked by Culloden viaduct.
